The plasmadisk synth controller

More information.

At this place i discribe one of my neon projects,… sound generation by high voltage and discharges. This is my plasma disk synth controller.
With this controller , i can controll a synthesizer or a filter  [filter or osc with control input], or for generating oscillator sounds such as my  hexillator. On the anode in the middle of the disc, there is a very high voltage . Therefore it must be carfully mesured, to prevent damages to my multimeters . Without touching the glass, the plate generates a fieldpower voltage of 10 up to 50 volts of alternate current power. See the lightning red  leds  of the duspol [it is nothing to connected.] when i put one contact of the meter to ground and the positiv of the meter connect to my hand, and with my other hand/finger plasma touches disk. .the multimeter displays 50 volts and up to 200 volts alternate current power. The voltage of  the lower part  of the disk varies from  50 volts to the upper part of the disk 200 volts. The high voltages are have no high Ampers so it is not really dangerous, but after all , there are many posibillities to use this disk in a nice diy project.

Maybe must i put a piece of metal or a piece of aluminum  tape on the edge of the disk and connect this to the ground/ground for more effect. Whith only the fingers on the plate will not generate enough voltage to controll another piece of gear.. I  think that I make it nevertheless an universal controller. With a standard voltage of 0~10 volts or 0~15 volts. To use the plasmadisk as a generator ,it is nevertheless a bit dangerous. There are still thousands off volts on that anode .

The neon oscillator

First a warning .
At this project, high voltages are used. Keep it all secure and think twice what you do, do not underestimate the dangers.

Many years ago ,i get a couple of used neon light bulbs. These comes out a neon divider somewhere from beginning 50′s out of a old electric organ. The standard idea of me with this projects , is that it must be simple to make, cheap and with the most of effect. With the neon oscillator you can create a saw pulse, and can be stepped down in tone , and can modulate as a primitive lfo. The basis principe has been based on neon relaxation oscillator. The output is on line level and easy to feed an external  amplifier/mixer or fx. The idea has been based on neon relaxation oscillator that was invented in de early years of the 20 century.

Above at the left , there is the power supply  with 100 a 110 volts output.  Resistor r1 discharces the circuit when the power is off .otherwise the oscillator works still after a few hours, even when i deconnect the plug. The basis oscillator diagram is in fact an basic example. It does the job, however, but you can really  freak with the extended posibillities of the expanded [standard] version. The standard oscillator is therefore the nicer version. This version has 2 neon bulb lights and a balance potentiometer . R3 is the frequency potentiometer. Switch next to c1 condensator is in fact optional. You can also expand the schematict with more neons.Also the switch is a beginning for my next project/schematics [with 8 neon lamps/oscillators]

Extra neon lamp,draw with the dotted stripes , gives an extra thick sound. C2 is a simple lfo [have been also dotted ] these modulate nicely the sounds. condensator must be between 0.5 uF and 2 uF.Bigger value of the condensator results in a lower lfo frequency. C1 is the basis frequency. How larger the value, how lower the sound. you can experiments therefore between  the 2 given values. Please do not experiment with the R2 of 100 k ohm resistor. Also use the condensator C1, you does not want a high voltage on your mixer , as it happens. And of course, use the line/audio transformator.

A beautiful example is my Hexillator, it  works with 6 neon light bulbs in a circle, and every neon bulb can used as an oscillator or modulator .At the bottom left there is a pwm switch and potentio meter. Simple put this 2 components between te middle connection wire from the transformator, to the upper hot wire of that transformator.

The steampunk doomsday machine.

This is my diy project  "steampunk doomsday machine". it is a fuzz /compressor like external effect for guitar or synthesizer/drummaschine .But i made it with decent steampunk influences  . So with a lot of wood and brass/ copper .At the top you see two 230 volts DC driven lightbulbs . [very dangerous]. Through the burning lightbulbs i send a audio signal . [this trick was contructed with transformers] The 2 brass tubes at the top sides are fatt condensers /elco.  And the 2 brass plumbing tubes hold a couple of ldr for the optical compressor.The switches and potentiometers are input/balance, compressor, thru bypass,sence/impedancy,gain/output. I discribe no schematics here on this project, because the whole thing is lethal.

 MS20 Filter

This is a filter based on the Lm13600 i.c. This filter is well know in the MS Korg series, and modified by Tim Escobedo for stompbox use ,and some small modifications by myself . Also i build my  "vintage Fuzz" in it for "sherman like" effects. And there is a nice Lfo with square , saw, trangle waveforms.A Switch for Low pass an High pass. This sallen key filter has a brute resonance.

My siel dk-70 modification.

More information.

At a visit to the local recycle shop, I spotted a siel dk70 for 15 euro.  At home, i tried  the synthesizer and noticed that the bottons do nothing. After somewhat maintenance to the carbon membrame buttons, the synthesizer works very well. but was very limited in usage. After a while i remember the the moog filter mod for the korg poly800 and it maybe works on the siel dk 70 to.So i put this modification in the dk-70. The basic range of the potmeters are larger than those on the mod of the poly800. So I changed only the potmeters on the p.c.b  with ordinary rotating potmeters. The filter/resonance regulation goes from low  to an total resonated overdrive[bleep].Like the slayer mod on the poly800, but with a improved regulation. The gain is a normal transistor distortion. I have put a switch next to the bender to switch the lfo depth on and off. So i do not use the momentary switch which sits standard in the frontpanel. [and i do not need to wrestle in that rotten menu .]. Therefore on that 2 wires simply on/off switch.

The DK 70 is a fully programmable, battery powered portable synthesizer.
It’s has a polyphony of  8 voices in normal mode and 4 voices in dual mode.
The memory holds 50 presets of which only 10 preset spaces are storable.
With an additional ROM or RAM cartridge, the  memory could be expanded to 100.
The keyboard doesn’t have any velocity sensitivity.
It has a chorus effect and also includes a two track sequencer which can store hold up to 200 notes.
With an optional mod grip and shoulder belt you could use the DK 70 as a portable "shoulder synth".

Vitage Fuzz

This is a minimalistic fuzz with only one actif component. There is also a standard clipping diode for the fuzz effect. You can use the standard version or the extended version with some nice extra possibilities. It can switch between silicium or germanium transistor /diode.The data on the front of the case, are related to the year of manufactured of that component. Please listen the demo mp3 to the end….

Circuitbend Casio Mt-750

More information.

This is a fully circuit bended casio mt750. [standard a pcm keyboard with a  minimum synthesizer possibilities ]. I get rid of the keyboard an make some bending at the front to live tweaking, and made build the whole thing in a nice case. Now there is a ringmodator and a amplifier circuit bend , also a simple germanium diode distortion .

Diy springreverb.

More information.

This was an idea that i had over 20 years, but now finally made it . I try make my diy stuff always as cheap  as possible, and is often use old and used components from other equipments. So i recicle in my own way.

The springreverb is approximately 1 meter long , and I use a leftover sewer tube from my bathroom renovation. Cleaned of course. On both sides i put a piece of p.v.c . As a reverb spring I use metal slinky spring [toy for the kids] of 3 euro at the local toy store. For the drivers and element I used some old loudspeakers, they fit well. At  the end of the spring ,I glued an plastic cap on the speakers to reduces the tension of the spring. Also, the tube must be placed vertically. If i places the tube horizontally, the spring rattles, and touches the lower partof the tube. There is also a [small] preamplifier for the mic/element and a power amplifier for the loudspeaker .

Hilltree Filter – DIY Filter With switchable dirt.

I was busy with developing a minimalistic filter which works on line level. This had to work creatively, and not special for studio. But it must work behind a synthesizer or any sound source. Now I am there according to me reasonable in successful. But this schematics use of 1 transistor of bc547 the type [but each npn do it according to me, also germanium]. And the hand full capacitances and ceramic condensers costs at the most but to a couple euro.

The sound what ends up there, is very nice. More L.P.F – heavily parametric – wah like. With regulable resonance in neutrally score. But I have added also still 3 pole to a switch with neutral middle class to let sound to the filter in steps sordid. Regulable filter with distortion/overdrive. This switch can replace of course to become by each random switch. Moreover almost each component is, however, at experiments by a another type. [R7 please not too much]. Feeding is not also critical, is possible even up to 15 volts. I have to try coordinate the components carefully, but the result can someone, differently, however, something deviate of course at. It is even for electronics beginners, on a bit [islands] prints. Easily to build in plasic/metal case or bend synth project, or as a stub box. Each sterile digital synth become this way a bit more.

Electret microphone to normal microphone converter.

Here is small easy and cheap schematics of a electret microphone to normal microphone level output. Electret microphone are frequently used at p.c/ computer microphones, and headset. These headsets are light, cheap and of reasonable quality for vocoder etc. But for a headset with possible vocoder to use, it must there therefore what adaptations to be made. This is my electret/microphone converter. Power feeding is possible with a 9 volt battery , or a small dc power supply. Below at the schematic a connection/mini jacket diagram for a p.c microphone

Simple overdrive/distortion

More information.

Before there responses come under the motto "WTF that cannot  work". It works therefore… and also still nice. This therefore my 1 component distortion is. There but 1 germanium diode are used and if necessary 1 pot meter to regulate the impact. The most of overdrive’s which you can buy on this principle have been also based, but generally still voorversterkertje sit. But synth do not have meeastal already amp to border… therefore at these need it therefore.

The germanium diode are possible being, possibly of the oa serial oa 95. Easily behind synth to place or at the send/return. Or behind 1 canal of a playing the drums computer. At overdrive/distortion diagram a modern silicon diode does not work moreover. also do not try… it works really not therefore it must real of a type germanium being, these is arrive moreover still normal. These give achtige overdrive to a tube. Silicon have a higher threshold tension then of the type of germanium. If one wants one can as a matter of fact afsluitweerstandje to mass behind the thing put (something between 100k and 1M the ohm) differently are the functioning of whole rather dependent on the ingangsinpedantie. of what hangs, but….a bit onvoorspelbaarheid is sometimes also nice. These germanium diode/transistor are nowadays used much which boutique jet ear pedals. The pedaaltje /stompbox [read expensive] what more exclusively to make.

These distortion work most beautiful with monofone indicators. With a polyphonic indicator it becomes already fast very sordid. Or you must find that natural leuker. The extra buds on the kastje are of a passive filter.

Freakatron Ringmodulator.

More information.

My passive Freakatron ring modulator standard has been built from impedance linetrafo’s Lm44 and the germanium diode’s oa95. But I have made up 2 switchable options with diode’s. I have trafo’s try of prim 200 ohm/sec 100 ohm and between prim 600 ohm /sec 300 ohm. These switchable diode’s stand in opposite pole with the ordinary diode. Now it seems that simply these the full indicator lets through, but it is partly the case. The diode has, as it happens, a threshold tension, and lets through therefore above certain level just indicator. Therefore nice nevertheless to obtain others results at freaken and. Also at the entrance and carrier input a pot meter has been placed [10k-100k is due to strong indicator]. This pot meter regulates therefore the input independently of the synthesizer pot meter. Output simply to the mixer or fx. Moreover, instead of the synth in the carrier can use you also simple tonegenerator/vco. Moan to use a complete synthesizer for that. A simple sine or other waveform does than complex the path more often better. In the higher frequencies one the typical ringmod hear bells. Also still extra switch have been made in. To switch between the entrance and the carrier. I are, as it happens, from time to time best, however, lazy, and plug are each time irritating. Therefore now there is change gear more still something with that switch simply, and this way too then nevertheless obtains than when you to the plugs would have let sit.

Kawai K1m circuit bending

More information.

This project is about circuit bending of a Kawai K1m synthesizer desktop module.
This synthesizer modules sold nowadays for a little bucks.But for a synthesizer the real time edit possibilities are a bit limited. The joystick is of course quite nice.
Therefore these synthesizer go’s under the knife.
But there is in fact nothing find on Internet how to bend this synthesizer and how to do, such as schematics and pictures .
So i must do the dirty job.

The k1m it is quite simple to bend , and there is much to  to bend , everything sits around one big I.C .
And that i.c was named Kawai p106 md8w [ on the small picture]
In fact you can combine every pole with another pole of this i.c.
also multiple connections is possible for more effect.
The only poles what you cannot connect with others are the + and – [pole 16 and 32]
This will blows up the i.c , so bewared !!!!!
And I think that it is not easy to replace this item.
left of that i.c at the connections /poles is a type of foot note like at an organ. Frequencys from 20Hz up to 20kHz
To the right of that i.c sits treble, noise, l.f.o, distortion, pwm, and a type of sample Frequency.
At the Left I put 2 push buttons and 2 switches , which can be freely connected through the breadboard to the poles.
This project is not difficult but if you have doubts about this … do not start this project!!!!
A couple switches is also enough , if you know which contacts and patches gives you the right sounds.
But in this way of course ,you get the most of possibilities, and that’s much with the breadboard.

Cymbal plate reverb

More information.

This is my diy  plate reverb, which was made from a large cymbal of a drumkit . The great advantage of an cymbal is, that is already sounds standard very well by its welded and hammered metal. By the lightest touch it will sounds and resonate . Ideal for a mechanical [plate] reverb. The cymbal is easy mounted in the middle of an case. Under the cymbal there is a large hole , so enough space for the contact elements and the driver speakers .There are 2 small loudspeakers on the surface.
One is driven by cheap computer audio amplifier [logitech] via the send on my mixer and  the other speaker or microphone goes to the mic in [send/return]on my mixer. You can also use a normal audio amp for that. The sound is nice metallic and with some dry signal, it is also usable at recordings for a more organic sound. Now it spends its live, hanging on the studio wall , and getteing reactions as "hey.. you are a winner of a cymbalist award " ?

Fatt Ass Overdrive

Here I describe my diy project of the FAT-ASS active transistor overdrive. This overdrive works on line level, but because the high gain level it producess ,It has a large range. Universal therefore ….. Now is my put in, that these for the " few electronics n00bs" also simple must make be. With going components, cheap and not many components. Now this diagram is in fact not terrible spectacular, because there are used but 1 actively component [amplifier staircase] in the form of NPN transistor. This is therefore basis electronics. Also the tone regulation, the right pot meter of 10k and 100nF the ceramic condenser is optionally, but too in fact nice there not use.

Transistor NPN type

The nicest thing about this schematics is, that the components and feeding are not terrible critical. 6 up to 12 volts of DC power do it [also pen valleys feedings] Capacitances and condensers… The value is not critical, Transistor is a tale separate. These do not have be of the NPN type… further determine it. A cheap silicon bc547 does it… but also beautiful germanium type for  cool vintage sound. Therefore if you old germanium have transistor, simply do I can imagine myself that one can 2 transistors of several types change gear with double switch, and this option will build. My overdrive box has, of outside interchangeable transistor on a transistor a foot. Therefore awful nicely for experimental purposes , and is possibly simple of outside finished contactable .Still just as a test elaboration used I 3 different transistors at the box. A standard BC547 silicon A former silicon/silicon BF242a An old 127 Germanium Bc547 has more high and the sound is what sharper than the other two Bf242a is what rounder and less sharp. Ac127 is still rounder and will to fail more a sound. The strengthening factor [HFE] of the transistor is of course also decisive for consonance. I have there just as a couple of the same type [bc547] tested. I have seen….they are not critical, of 125 to 475 I have moreover gone myself for germanium type.

Easy and simple pre-amp/booster

Last weekend i messed around with a reverb tank.
And the large disadvantage of these things is, which they are in fact entirely passive, and therefore for/after amplifying is necessary to work.
I had already searched in books and the Internet for a simple universal schematic.
In the books stand frequently solicit of that basis with general values which you yourself must count the Internet from, and not this way beautiful universally and minimalistic such as I have made this diy project.
Therefore. .what I here now mail does not exist in fact already, however. . also this way beautiful completely. [it is basis electronics]

Nicely universal pre-amp/ booster therefore. Simply put it ,for or after, a piece of gear.
Also nice as a stompbox fx for a [bass]guitar .For amplifying of reverb tank or ring modulator… your own imagination is the limit.
Or simply for an power amplifier .sounds well clean.
The price of the whole diy project is proximally not more than 3 euro.

The upper diagram is the final, therefore good version.
The bottom diagram works also good, but is more if basis/example version has thought with gain regulation these capacitances also no [100k] parallel concerning the entrance and termination for possible condensers at discharge [pop noise]… volume must regulate on the piece gear.
The npn transistor are again not critical, you can use any type.
I have try standard npn silicon bc547 and this sounds good with it.
Amplifies 4x up to 10x.
Also germanium types  can be used for a smattering luxuriously and vintage sound.

This is not a project of me, but a project that is described in the "Gitarre & Bass" August August 2010 [german magazine]. This is a little project that I am going to recreate . This is a kind of controllable pitch shifter / ringmod / fuzz / vibrato / voice modulator

Once i was look around a Ht8950 integraded circuit .This is a lofi sound/effect processor mostly used in kids toys. But this i.c is often around 4 euros and hard to find, and at a given moment i notice the Velleman kit MK171 robot voice. This kit is fairly cheap to order ,and has the nessesary components allready onboard

The blue line and resistor is a simple dry/wet regulator and can give an nice feedback

smashotronics™ compressor/Limiter

More information.

This is a minimalistic compressor/limiter that I have developed. This thing works on line audio level, and is purely for creatively use , not special for in the studio .Place it  behind a synthesizer or a sound source. Now I am again reasonable successful in creating The smashotronics™ compressor/limiter.

It is even for electronics beginners  cheap and easy to make .Easily to build in plastic/metal case or bend synth project .But the whole thing works with 1 active element, as it happens, normal npn transistor. For the transistor what can be used [such as bc547] If you want this project somewhat luxuriated ? ,use a germanium type transistor . The diode’s d2 and d3 are the passive limiter part.
For more limiting ,put some diodes in serial with d2 and d3.The complete diagram is not terrible critically, and any component can chance with another type. .One side of potentiometer R8 is possible with 1 leg for the condenser C1 [is now after] for real true-bypass a regulation. The whole thing works with 9V~12V dc voltage.

The Wasabitar

More information.

At this schematic, a piece of electronics what i called the Wasabitar ©
It is a overdrive/distortion , and it sounds between an oriental instrument and a strange type of fuzz.
In the circuit there is a pieces of an ordinary preamp, a half ring modulator , and a wahwah.

It is even for electronics beginners cheap and easy to make, on a piece [islands] PCB.
Easily to build in a plastic, metal case or bend synth project, also nice as a stomp box.
Works on synthesizer line level, but also well behind a guitar.

The whole thing functions with one normal active npn transistor .
Every normal transistor can be used [such as bc547]
You want it what luxury ?, germanium type is a nice variant. You can use also high gain or fet types .Switch S1 and diode D4 are optional for a more dramatic impact and sound .

Colored tone tremelator.

This is my  "Colored tone tremelator"
It is a nice minimalistic tremolo / lfo thats works on line level ,It can be placed afer an synthesizer or guitar.
There are only two active transistors at the schematics  [1 oscilator /lfo en 1amplifier] normal NPN transistors can be used. The whole thing is basic electronics.
Nice thing that is , the schematic is not verry critical about the components , ther is room for experiments.
At the left transistor there is the oscillator /lfo circuit , at the right transistor transistor the amplifier what modulates the signal.
Switch at the right is optional, for a more dramatical effect .

T.M.K  [too many knobs]

This is not my schematics , but it was designed by Tim Escobedo and the schematics was rewritten by Gaussmarkov.

It was designed to be highly interactive with a guitar. but it sounds also good with a drum maschine or a synthesizer.The t.m.k  can produce a wide range of overdrive ,distortion and fuzzy sounds. This is my intepretation with some modifications. Check the bias potentiometer mod , this gives the whole thing more bottom and bite.Click on the schematics for a bigger picture or download. Notice the dot for the .1uF , this is 100nF .Check the partlist for the corrected components

Yamaha DX27 synthesizer Modification

After a accident in my studio , my yamaha dx27 had some serious damage. Several broken keys, key hook up construction was broken ,and what minor things where broken. So as a follow up to my siel dk70, this keyboard get the same treadment. Repair cost more than a yamaha dx27 goes this days on ebay. The dx spend its live further as a synthmodule.

The small schematics of the breath controll input , was used for a optional controller [ribboncontroller e.d] A normal 1Meg Ohm potentiometer between tip and ring of a mini stereo jackplug , can controll more than 7 octave on the keyboard. Or the other programmable breath controll parameters. An extra 1 Meg Ohm potmeter can adjust the offset.

In the youtube video i used a sony video8 tape for the ribbon controller. The tape has a resistance of 10kOhm / cm, so 30cm gives 30kOhm. Above the ribbon there is a guitar string.

 Normal relay to pulse relay

This is a handy schematics how to make with some standard electronics ,from a normal electrical relay to a pulse relay [bistable relay] . This is nice for the electronic mucisian [ footswitch on hold/ sequencer /modular e.d] .No i.c’s or transistors are used. Resistor R3 is somwhat critical to the power input . Whith a 12 volt relay  the power /resistor , 9V = 47 Ohm / 12V= 220 Ohm / 15V = 470 Ohm resistor. You can also use a small potentiometer for R3. Now works the momentary switch as a normal on-off switch.

Steampunk "Equinoxe Device"

This is a steampunk project with wood and brass, based on the 70" electro harmonix small stone phaser. With decent steampunk influences , not overloaded with brass gear and wires that doesn’t work !!!. The small stone phaser was a broken second hand pcb  with no case . Repaired and modded. And ofcource …everything works fine now. On the top of the case there is a on /off pulse switch [with my normal relay to puls relay circuit] for the thru bypass and a status led.Inside the device there ar six potentiometers and a toggle switch and 2 color led. Controls from top left , Dawn, Cloud, Hue, Wave, Axial, Fog, Sun, Moon, Eclipse. Bending and mods from the original pcb are a wet/dry control , feedback/resonance , depth of the effect, speed , gain, and the Q from the filter.

 Tube pre-amp / Filter

Here I describe my tube amp/filter project.
I was a complete time busy with making/devise of tube filter which works on line level.
 Simple behind a synthesizer or audio sound source.I searched for a standard tube design [it exist already more than 100 years] that work on normal stompboxl low voltage of 9 up to 12 volts DC.Also had there and rather cheap, and easily available tube is used.
That became ECC82 [12AU7].But because fail technique already very old is, and much have been invented already and made, stands in fact therefore everything already described.Also is stuck you with many components to let work to the tube.What information concerning Ecc82, the beginning 1960s.Rather basis work therefore, and such documentation is described frequently already standard from the factory.

Now I met again that this design concerning am taken by Matsumi in its valvecaster called.
Also is there already quite what documentation about this to find on the Internet.
[For people who want know this, the design is therefore free of rights]
The tube can be used therefore of nicely, almost highend, hifi clean [components adapted with what], to reasonable overdrive.

Now the Ecc82 beside the many called advantages also couples has disadvantages.
This tube not to see you glowing, because the filament is hidden, this are beautiful solve behringer style If the tube on noval fsocket stands you can place in the middle of small ledje which the tube lighted.Also this tube is send very difficult in itself oscillation.
And if you have him in itself oscillation you no longer hear original audio indicator or grasp the complete circuit dead.

I this by my own DIY filter have solved design [that an active derivative is the baxandall tone regulation], minimum in the diagram to incorporate.This goes really as schakelbare [or one can omit it whole for audio/tube purists]Whole is for which what is not electronica make knowledge difficult.
